In 1978, the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, lent her name to the once-tiny shoe company that would, in time, become the largest supplier of athletic apparel and shoes in the world. It wasn't until 1982 that Nike aired its first television advertisement. Until then, it relied only on print ads and "word of foot." In 1988, the most famous quote by Nike, "Just Do It," was named by Advertising Age as one of the top five taglines of the 1900s.
If you've ever wondered how the Nike quote, "Just Do It," came about, you need only look to the execution of Utah murderer Gary Gilmore in 1977. While in front of a firing squad of five, he was asked if he had a final statement. At 8:08 a.m. on January 17th, he uttered the words on which the most famous of Nike quotes would be based: "Let's do it."
